Here's our final reflection post from our Alaska Mission Team, this time from graduated senior Jennifer Corke: On Thursday we traveled to a place called Stone Soup. This is a soup kitchen that provides for the homeless community in Fairbanks, Alaska. This kitchen is owned by a man named Dan. I was touched by this man's spirit; you could see the beautiful relationships he created with the people who came to get soup. I had the opportunity to talk to these people and learn their stories. Though many of these people struggle with drug addiction, alcoholism, and mental illness, these things were truly left behind when I talked to them at the kitchen. I learned of many tales of wildlife and adventure, family traditions, and paths to faith. I was taught by Dan that our purpose on this earth is to help others---it's that simple. Our hearts were truly opened to loving those who may be lost. I am thankful that I had the opportunity to serve others and build relationships. I hope I can continue to serve in a similar way when I get back home.
Here are two more blog posts from our Alaska Mission Team as they reflect back on the week they had. The first is from rising Sophomore Michael Jenz: The trip to Alaska was my first with FLY, an I am sure it will not be the last. This past week I have learned so much about my friends, my faith, and myself that has stirred me to make changes in the way I go about my life. The other 18 students have been a fundamental part of this amazing experience, but the people who I worked with and for were instrumental in opening my eyes. On Friday my crew served at Stone Soup, a soup kitchen for the poor or afflicted. There we had the opportunity to talk to several of the people eating there, I heard their stories, each person with their own burdens, regrets, and sorrows. Despite their disposition these people had a community, they sat with their friends and talked just like I do at school. I was able to see them a people rather than problems, in turn changing my perspective on service.. I am so thankful that I was able to go on this trip, it was a time I will never forget. Sincerely, Michael Jenz
This prayer is not a secret. #PrayTogether as we lift these words separately in our hearts. Week of June 16, 2019
Church is full of excitement as we successfully started our vbs adventure!
Here's the next FLY Mission Trip Story from Caroline Morawski! "VBS Musical Starring FLY!" Last Sunday we began our six day adventure of helping with VBS at First Baptist Church of the North Pole. Children ages 1-13 are welcome in the church from all parts of the community for bible study, crafts, snacks, games, and of course, worship time. This time comes with LOTS of music and dance. As mission trip leaders and helpers it is a part of our role to use this time before and after the other stations to get the children excited about VBS. With this goal in mind, as a group, FLY gets VERY into it. Emphasis on very. We get super into the VBS songs. There are six songs all with the theme "In the Wild: and all complete with hand motions and facial expressions. As one can imagine, these songs are the type that get stuck in your head for weeks. To me, it has been interesting to see the energy in the room grow from the first day of VBS to the last day. The children's commitment to learning about the Lord and his work has developed and become evident throughout the course of the week, seen especially through our time of worship. I can safely say as a whole, FLY is thankful to be given the oppportunity to help children praise God and have a blast while doing so.
Please keep our Alaska group in your prayers as they finish up their week of service and prepare to travel home. You can see what they have been up to here: https://www.prayingpelicanmissions.org/mission-trip-journals?tripid=14816
Our FLY team to Fairbanks has had a wonderful and Spirit-filled time! As we head into our final day, here are two stories from our youth. Stay tuned for two more tonight... From Ashley Zima: Over the course of this week, we have had so much fun in Alaska! We have served alongside so many amazing leaders this week! At site #1 we met Ross who has been such an inspiration to all of us, he cares so much about Eagles Wings (which is an assisted senior home)! He loves helping out there and has made us all feel what we are doing here is super duper important! At site #2 we met Larry and Brayden (who is Larry's grandson). We have also seen God through his work at a different senior home. Brayden has taught us so much through his fun-loving spirit of being a kid in Alaska, we have played so many games and shared so many laughs with him. Larry has been so helpful in teaching about his awesome life, he has the best stories and he knows so so much about the work he does! We have been so thankful to work alongside these incredible people this week in Alaska!
